The theme this week at KAMP KIDSPACE was "KIDSPACE has talent." The children proved it to be very true today when they put on their very own talent show.
It all began early Monday morning discussing the difference between attributes and talents. The question for the children was, "a ball has attributes, but does it have talents?' What about you and your friends? Do you have attributes? What about talents? The children decided balls have attributes and no talents (except if bouncing is a talent) . The children agreed they have attributes and talents!! What were their talents? As one student said, "Everybody has talents, but they're not the same."
Many students discovered they not only had a talent for acting, but a passion too! The children presented a showcase of fairy tales, complete with props and costumes. The list of plays is impressive, but the performances were even better. In fact, there was definitely some competition for Broadway and a buzz of Tony nominations. The classics presented at the KIDSPACE talent show were: Caps for Sale, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, The Little Red Rooster (better known as The Little Red Hen), The Three Bears, and The Three Little Pigs.
Besides drama, there were group and individual dances, a guitarist, a comedienne, jumpropers, a recorder performance, a singing duet, and an air show. A very diverse and talented group to be sure.
One of the unexpected highlights of the show came at the very end. Some of the older preschoolers were asked if they wanted to skip naptime to watch the talent show put on by the school agers. Of course they said yes. They were given VIP seats in the front row and they were extremely attentive. When the curtain closed on the final act, one of the preschoolers said, "Hey, what about my talent? I can dance!" And with that he and three of his buddies took their place on stage and danced their hearts out to music that was quickly found for them. One of the school agers commented with much sincerity, "I liked when the little kids danced." We all did.
It was an amazing week discovering and playing with our talents. We all learned a little bit more about ourselves, what we enjoy, what we can do even though it may be out of our comfort level and everyone grew this week. Most of all, we learned to appreciate the talents of others. A second grader so eloquently expressed all our feelings, "It made me feel good of their talent!"
