The Best Educational Games for Kids

Board games have always been a great way for parents to spend time with their kids. Is it possible the benefits extend beyond just family fun?

Most board games, on an elementary level, are a great way for learning colors and numbers. There’s also the strategic element, where kids have to think one or more moves ahead. They get social benefits too, such as waiting your turn and the experience of winning and losing.

Now, with video games being used for educational purposes, parents have more options than ever on games for their children. To help, we’d like to spotlight three of our favorite games. Who knows… you might enjoy playing too!

Uno

Uno, which debuted back in 1971, has survived the test of time and is still a household favorite for all ages. It’s a staple for kids learning their numbers and colors, especially as matching and pattern recognition are such central parts of the game. There’s also the strategy aspect, as your child will have to anticipate which cards to use or save in order to prevent others from winning, which exercises their decision-making skills.

If your child is very young, you might just focus on holding and playing the cards, which is still a great way to fine-tune motor skills. Then, you’ll have the deck for when they’re ready to play a full game!

The Tasty Science Kit

This amazing science kit is geared best for kids aged 6-11 years old. In it is a test tube lab and 10 different activities to try, including experiences like making a cake rise, creating crystallized candy and making drinks fizz.

This is a great introduction to chemistry, as well as creating treats in the kitchen! Baking activities like this require kids to follow activity guides, use measurements and decide which concoctions to make.

Fish School HD

Despite parent’s concerns, video game can be educational too. Fish School is an app that contains 8 different activities, and the educational aspect focuses on shapes, colors, letters and numbers. Kids learn as they play, and the game has a very easy interface. It’s available on iTunes and can be used on iPads.
