ROBINS – Mac and Cheese, Muffins & Mussels

The Robins tried Mussels from Penn Cove, Washington.
Penn Cove is located on Whidbey Island.  The shells of these mussels are
thin and the meat is very full, and with a flavor sweeter than any other mussels, with not a trace of sand or grit.

Cleaning the Mussel was lots of fun. The Mussels were put in the red sensory tub with some water and the kiddos were given a toothbrush to brush, brush, brush the outside of the shell.

We put the Mussels into a pan with butter.  We added some pepper and salt too.
We knewMussels were done when the shells opened up.Our next cooking project was Mac and Cheese Muffins……

INGREDIENTS
1/2 lb. of macaroni
1/3 cup of bread crumbs
a little salt and pepper
1 tablespoon of butter
1 1/2 tablespoons of flour
1 1/2 cups of milk
1 cup of grated cheeseWe boiled salted water in a large pot and then we added the macaroni and cooked it until it was almost tender.
We drained it and set it aside.

Then we melted butter over low heat, sprinkled the flour into the butter and then slowly added milk.
We whisked the sauce until it was thick.

Finally, we added grated cheese and stirred until the sauce was smooth.

We mixed in the cooked macaroni, bread crumbs and a little salt and pepper.

We stirred and stirred and stirred some more. Until everything was mixed together.
We put the mixture into muffin cups, and baked them in a 350 degrees for 8 minutes.
The Mac and Cheese Muffins were enjoyed by everyone.

The Mussels were not so popular, though many children tried them. We give the children kudos for trying a new food.

Until next week and cooking with foods that start with N!
