PURE COLLABORATION

Have you ever given much thought to what it takes to spearhead, engineer and build a skyscraper?  Probably not. However, you have no doubt, had to collaborate with a peer or co-worker on a project.  Did it go smoothly?  Were you able to work together to accomplish your goals without a lot of turmoil?

We often say, “Children’s play is their work” and for good reason.  The play in the above photographs was spontaneous and child initiated.  They began wih a plan . . . “Let’s make it tall!”  They each took turns adding the magnetic tiles, working together in perfect unison.  And then . . . without warning the tall tower collapsed on itself.  There was never a twinge of blame . . . instead they laughed together and began the process all over with delight.

This play project was full of mathematical and scientific learning opportunities for these two children.  Some of it they may have picked up on . . . or perhaps they’ll revisit this activity another day to investigate the hows and whys.  At this moment, the important learning piece was the joy and sense of accomplishment of working and building together.

As these two grow and tackle more important projects I am betting other committee members will be happy to have them on their team . . . because these two four year olds are already learning there is no “I” in the word TEAM!
