CHICKADEES – Toast Painting

The Chickadees love to paint, and personally so do I.  Its a very calming activity and allows each child to express themselves in their own way.  Sometimes a child will just put a stroke or two on a piece of paper and say they are done, but other children will fill their whole paper, so much so, that we have to get them a new piece before they rip a hole in it.

The Chickadees didn’t paint on paper this time though.  Instead each of them were given a piece of bread and some colored milk to paint with.  And just like with painting on paper, painting on toast proved to be another expression of each child’s style. Some added lots of color and painted the whole piece, others just added a swipe or two and were done, but all of them turned out great and yummy too.

If you want to try this at home, just add a few drops of food coloring to your milk and have your child paint it on the piece of bread.  After you “paint”,  toast  the bread,  and enjoy.  A couple hints: using white bread or potato bread works well because you can really see the colors. You can also use sweetened condensed milk or add sugar to milk for a sweeter treat.
