ROBINS – Homemade Hummus

This week’s cooking is all about the letter “H”

Have you ever made homemade Hummus?
Making homemade hummus was the food challenge for our class this week.

Below is the recipe we used.  Try it at home.

1 16 oz. can of chickpeas
1/4 cup liquid from the can of chickpeas
3-5 tablespoons of lemon juice
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons olive oil

Preparation:
Drain chickpeas and set aside liquid from can.
Add chickpeas to blender.
Here comes the fun part…crushing the garlic.
The children used a metal spoon to give the garlic a good wack.
By doing so, it makes it easy to peel the garlic.
The students discovered did not really like the smell of raw garlic.
Next, the students squeezed a lemon and poured the juice into the blender.
Great work girls.

We then blended all the ingredients together for 3-5 minutes.
We enjoyed our homemade hummus with crackers and carrots.
We also sampled other foods that begin with the letter H:
Hot chocolate
Hash-browns
Havarti cheeseInviting children to join you in the kitchen is not only an opportunity for endless learning, but it also provides time to make life-long memories.  Below is a link to a great website for cooking with children.
